SKY ROCKET
CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
APRIL 28, 2010 |
| Welcome back to another construction update for Kennywood's newest coaster, Sky Rocket. It's only been a day since our last update, but seeing as they got quite a bit of trackwork done today, we thought we would put up a quick update showing it off, including a nice little surprise. Let's take a look... |
| |
Let's start this update off with a nice overview of the construction site...and what's that I see in the distance? Is that a... |
| |
If you guessed a) Superman or b) a plane, then unfortunately you were wrong. But if you guessed c) a newly erected corkscrew, you win! |
| |
Ah, how beautiful this part of the ride looks. It's so nice to finally have an inversion put together for Sky Rocket! |
| |
The corkscrew flying over top of the bunny hills just makes this part of the ride look so awesome! |
| |
Another look at Sky Rocket's corkscrew...it'll only be a little while longer before trains are flying through this baby. |
| |
How this section of the ride totally exceeded my expectations. So my original statment remains, this is definitely one of my favorite looking parts of this coaster. |
| |
When I said they got a quite a bit of work done, I wasn't joking. Along with the corkscrew, they also installed the first overbanked turn as well. I have a very strong feeling this part of the ride is going to be VERY forceful coming off of the second drop. |
| |
Another great feature of this overbank is it comes a lot closer to the ground than any other part of Sky Rocket. I really think this coaster offers a very nice collection of elements and is surely not going to disappoint any riders. |
| |
This was about as far as they got for the day, but along with the track, they also installed several supports as well. |
| |
It should be any day now that Big Red is moved from the construction site so they can start working on the second drop and continue working backwards back towards the launch. You can also see how close the bottom of the second drop will come to the ground in this picture as well. |
| |
An overview of the progress they've made on this section of the ride. After today, I would probably say they are about 70% done installing the rides structure. |
| |
As I said earlier, several supports were also put into place today including this one that belongs to the entrance to the barrel roll. |
| |
The big guy on the right side of the picture was also installed today and belongs to the pullout for the first drop. |
| |
Nothing new here, but hopefully we'll see some track placed in this area in the coming days. |
| |
Looking in the area of the entrance to the first hill, you can see they've been working on several of the supports in preparation for placing track. The first piece for the first hill is now sitting on site and I would assume it will probably be installed soon. |
| |
Another look at the piece of track sitting on site. When this is installed, it will be the first piece of spined track to be installed on the coaster. |
| |
One final look at this piece of track that is patiently waiting for its turn to be installed. |
| |
As we saw in the last update, all of the LSM motors were installed on the launch. |
| |
Considering we didn't get very close in the last update, here's a nice look at the newly installed LSM motors. As you can see, all the wires are sitting and waiting to be hooked up. |
| |
In other news, this piece of track was on its way out of the parking lot. |
| |
Considering this piece is one of the first pieces for the top hat, I highly doubt its headed to the construction site. My guess is the park is starting to relocate the track to another location in preparation for the start of the season. |
| |
And we'll finish this update off with a nice shot of the overall look of the construction site. It should be any day now that the barrel roll and first hill is seen spanning this site. |
| |
