SKY ROCKET
CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
MARCH 31, 2010 |
| Welcome back to another construction update for Kennywood's newest coaster, Sky Rocket. Today, we were greeted with a wonderful surprise when we saw several bright new pieces of track connected to their respected supports. By the end of the day, these hardworking steel workers were able to get the final overbank and the two airtime hills up. There's no doubt that the construction is progressing at a very fast pace and I wouldn't be surprised if they had up to the corkscrew put up by early next week. Anyways, on with the pictures... |
| |
We'll start this update off with an overview shot of the construction site. No new supports have went up, but as you can see the track for the bunny hills and the overbank are now up. More track was being put up as these pictures were being taken. |
| |
Another angle of the airtime hills that were put up earlier today. I can only assume that the track sitting on the ground in the foreground belongs to the surf curves and should be going up in the next day or so. |
| |
At this point in the day, they had the final piece of the overbank turn in place. They seem to be working backwards like I predicted in the last update. |
| |
Like I said earlier, these guys were flying through the assembly today...This is definitely a group of guys on a mission. Look closely in the background and you can see the next piece of track being lifted off the ground. |
| |
Another shot of the second piece of the overbank being lifted in the area. |
| |
Here you can see the progress they made on finale of the ride. After this airtime hill, the train is going to make a sharp left turn into the "slowdown zone" and final brake run, and bring riders back to the station and ending the coaster. |
| |
Several pieces of the surf curves await assembly as a piece of the overbank turn is lifted off the ground. |
| |
Another shot of the action. If you look closely at the bottom of the picture you can see footers that look a little different than all the rest. These footers look to be rectangular in shape, not circular like the others. I wonder what these are for and why they are different. |
| |
Don't cry young corkscrew support, you'll be getting your track very soon! |
| |
I know it seems like its taking forever for this one piece of track to be lifted off the ground, but these pictures were all taken in a short period of time! |
| |
Where there's smoke there must be fire!...er, or the manlift is moving into position. |
| |
Here's a nice panoramic view of the construction site. This picture gives you a really good perspective of how much these amazing workers have gotten accomplished in less than two weeks! Bravo! |
| |
I sure hope these guys aren't just up here for the view! Hmm, I wonder why they are up there? |
| |
Maybe it has something to do with this guy that seems to have taken forever to get lifted off the ground? |
| |
Ahh, that's right...these guys have a coaster to build! Here you can see the second piece of the overbank being put into place. |
| |
Talk about an amazing job...who wouldn't want to help put together something as cool as a new roller coaster? |
| |
Another angle of the track going into place...see what I mean about an amazing job? |
| |
Just think, at this pace there's going to be a train racing through this overbank within the next month or so. |
| |
On the other side of the construction site, the station area was also receiving its share of attention. |
| |
For those of you that don't know, the blankets you see on the three footers here are used to keep water out while the cement is curing. This seems to indicate that these footers just received some fresh cement, mostly likely for the caps of the footers. |
| |
Like I said, the station area was receiving a lot of attention today as well. They seemed to be pouring cement for something in the vicinity of the station and launch area. |
| |
Another look at the action going on in this area. My guess is they are pouring cement for the caps of some of the footers, either for the final break run or the launch. |
| |
One more look at the busy station area...A new station will be sitting here in no time! |
| |
We'll wrap this construction update up with a final look at the construction site from this afternoon. There's no doubt this is going to look a lot different by the next update! |
